The world is knocking on the doors of Delta businesses and the opportunities that lie before us are significant, according to the new chair of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, Orville A. Nickel, of O.N.E. Corporation.

Speaking at the Delta Chamber’s annual general meeting, Nickel said that a strong economy helps to promote and pay for healthy social programs and thereby builds community.

“Successful businesses are the backbone of a strong economy and this Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting and promoting sound business practices to achieve positive economic results," Nickel said.

Deltaport is one significant economic driver for Delta businesses. It is expanding and infrastructure is being built by the different levels of government to accommodate new businesses in Delta.

“The Chamber movement in a broader context is about promoting successful ‘trade’ and ‘commerce’.  As your local Chamber of Commerce we have adopted a vision of ‘strengthening commerce and industry’ in our community because it matters to the economic and social well being of Delta," Nickel said.

“So we have adopted a new vision for the Delta Chamber: ‘Strengthening commerce and industry because Delta matters.’”

Mayor Lois Jackson spoke at the Chamber luncheon, covering topics such as the rapid implementation of the Invest in North Delta plan, the land in Tilbury industrial park that was once a shake and shingle plant now developed by Ocean Trailer, the Neighbourhood Road Improvement Plan, the new interchange adjacent to Boundary Bay Airport opening up the Dayhu development which could attract as many as 1,000 jobs to Delta, Ladner Harbour development, various other projects, and the plan to decrease the municipality’s debt, which started at $44.7 million in 1999, down to $2.6 million by the end of this year.
