Mary Jane Shannon Elementary students get down to business
For the second year in a row, students at Mary Jane Shannon Elementary have put their design and sales skills to the test.
Nearly 50 students were asked to design, build, market, and then sell a product as part of the school's Young Entrepreneur Show, held at the Surrey school Wednesday.
Students from Grades 4 and 5 first had to survey other students at the school to see what types of products would be most desirable. Then they created a business plan outlining their product and the costs associated with producing it, along with expected pricing.
Grade 5 student Emma Cordwin created hand-made puppets for $2 each.
"My mum is really good at sewing and I wanted to learn how to sew," said Emma, "so I thought puppets would be a good idea."
Classmate Josh Kennedy made 50 beaded bunny bracelets in various sizes to increase the sales possibilities. Using both string and wire to make the colourful beaded creations, Kennedy admitted "sometimes they are really hard to make."
A portion of the money raised at the Young Entrepreneur Show will be donated to the charity of the student's choice.
