Fire on ice
The Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society supports athletes with physical disabilities by supporting SportAbility’s Sledge Hockey program in Surrey with a $5,000 grant, which will be spent on procuring new equipment such as sleds, hockey sticks, and jerseys among others.
The participants in the program are mostly amputees or have had spinal injuries. The program, however, is not limited to people with physical disabilities as it is also open to able-bodied players.
“When I play sledge hockey, mine and everyone else’s disability no longer matters. I’ve made great friends here and have a lot of fun. It’s a great way to stay fit. It’s really fun to be part of a team for the first time in my life,” says 29-year-old amputee, Thea Hill, Surrey Eagles Sledge Hockey Team and the BC Women’s Team member.
SportAbility, together with its athletes, members, and volunteers are grateful to the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society for aiding them with the means to continue with this program and give both current and aspiring athletes with disabilities the resources to be more active and be part of a different community.

Established in 1976, SportAbility BC – a non-profit organization that provides athletic and recreational opportunities to people with physical disabilities. SportAbility offers sporting programs in Sledge Hockey, Boccia, Powerchair Football, Para-cycling, and 7-A-Side Soccer.
