Putting friendship on the table in Surrey

It’s a long shot, one aimed at bringing people together in a novel way: A five-course meal for 500 people at a 500-foot-long table.

It’s called The Long, Long Table: A Community Affair.

The Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association (BIA) has its sights on a massive meal as a way to forge connections and bring the community together – to break bread, shoulder to shoulder.

The BIA is inviting 500 people to share the meal together on Sept. 7 at Surrey City Hall, 13450 104 Ave.

The event’s networking portion will be from 4:30-5:30 p.m. People will then be seated at a 500-foot-long table at 5:45 p.m. The event will conclude by 8 p.m.

The five-course meal will feature an international menu – tomato gazpacho, veggie samosas and pakora, traditional Greek salad, maple soy salmon and blueberry shortcake – with international music in the background.

Organizers say the long-table layout will encourage interaction that would otherwise not occur, enabling opportunities for friendships and networking within the community.

Tickets to The Long, Long Table are $35 plus GST, or $25 plus GST for students at Simon Fraser University.

Tickets can be purchased at surreyLLT.Eventbrite.com or at the Downtown Surrey BIA office at #330, 10362 King George Blvd.
