The Surrey Art Gallery is seeking new people to lead school kids on weekday tours.

The winter training session begins next month for potential volunteers who are 19 or older and have experience in leadership and an interest in the visual arts.

Docents use questioning techniques and hands-on activities to help students respond to original works of art. They share and develop skills, build social networks, and engage in meaningful volunteer time.

Training consists of exhibition orientations by gallery curators, exhibiting artists’ lectures, workshops and co-operative learning on contemporary art and art education.

Training and tours take place at the Surrey Art Gallery, located at 13750 88 Ave. Thirty hours of time is required each month for the first three months of training, then 20 hours each month of the school year.

The application deadline is Jan. 10, 4 p.m. Contact the volunteer coordinator at 604-501-5189 or kelang@surrey.ca. An application form can be downloaded from www.arts.surrey.ca (Get Involved/Volunteer).
