Surrey-born-and-raised country singer Lisa Brokop is coming home, this time to perform with her younger cousin, jazz singer/songwriter Jaclyn Guillou.

Brokop has been a household name since the 90s and has started a new band called The Jeffersons.

This will be the first time Brokop and Guillou will perform together, crossing the borders of jazz and country at the Surrey Arts Centre on Aug. 11.

Both singers will be accompanied by outstanding musicians which include Nashville guitar player/singer/songwriter and Brokop’s husband Paul Jefferson. David Blake, a local Vancouver jazz musician will be performing alongside Guillou.

Brokop and Guillou are cousins through their mother’s side of the family and their families are quite closely connected. When Lisa got her first record deal at the age of 16 her little cousin Jaclyn was just a wide-eyed kid seeing her occasionally at family barbeques in their Surrey home.

“I’ve really secretly always wanted to be jazz singer,” says Brokop. “We are extremely excited to collaborate for the first time ever and share songs and stories with hometown fans.”

Guillou says she always wanted to be a country singer and sang along to Brokop’s records as a kid.

“Once I saved up all my money from months of chores so that I could buy a boombox and a microphone in order to sing along to her CD,” she says.

Brokop currently lives in Nashville with her husband and will perform an acoustic show with a set list of new and old songs. Guillou is Vancouver-based and will be performing some classic jazz and popular favorite songs that include “Over The Rainbow” and “Fly Me To The Moon.”

The concert takes place Aug. 11, 7:30 p.m. at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88 Ave. For tickets, phone 604-501-5566 or check tickets.surrey.ca
