World dance competition fast approaching
Add Jennifer Chu to the list of local dancers headed to Germany to represent Canada next month.
The 12-year-old is among several Surrey and North Delta dancers to be chosen for the Canadian National Dance Team that will be competing in the International Dance Organization (IDO) World Dance Championships 2012 from Oct. 4-7. The Canadian team is led by choreographers Danielle Gardner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada and Joshua Beamish, artistic director of MOVE: The Company.
Chu, who attends Surrey’s Artistic Edge Dance Academy, had been dancing for six years, training in jazz, hip-hop, modern, ballet and lyrical styles. She is the current Junior Provincial Champion in jazz.
At the world’s, she’ll be competing in group ballet, jazz and modern dance. As well, she’ll present her lyrical solo, choreographed by Artistic Edge owner Sheila Fergus, and a solo modern piece choreographed by Beamish.
It costs about $4,500 to attend the competition and dancers are seeking sponsorship and/or donations to offset their travel and competition expenses.
