Experience nomadic culture of the Middle East through Surrey artist's eyes
Elizabeth Carefoot doesn’t just have an armchair interest in the customs and culture of the nomads of the Middle East– she has experienced it first-hand.
This Thursday (March 7) at 7:30 p.m., as part of the Thursday Artist Talk speaker series at the Surrey Art Gallery, the Surrey-based artist will share insights from experience and knowledge gained over 40 years.
She’ll reveal little-known facts and lore about handwoven rugs, marriage and funerary rites of nomadic and city-dwelling Berbers, costume, and Arab hospitality of the desert as well as anecdotes of her adventures as a belly dancer in Egypt. She will also give a brief performance of an Algerian folk dance, and will bring a selection of handicrafts, including jewellery and textiles.
Admission is free.
The Surrey Art Gallery is located at 13750 88 Ave. Phone 604-501-5566.
