This hotel is open for Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen’s powerful and inspirational music is coming to the Surrey Arts Centre, courtesy of the Firehall Arts Centre and Arts Club Theatre Company.
His music and lyrics are the heartbeat of Chelsea Hotel, riveting fusion of music, dance and theatre, in a series of performances from Feb. 20 to March 1, with available 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows.
In the new production, haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York's infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song.
With Cohen's fans in mind, six performers will play 17 instruments, set in an eclectic cabaret of loves crumpled up and tossed aside like a writer’s first draft – the perfect setting for a music, enchantment, desire, passion and love.
Chelsea Hotel is conceived and directed by Tracey Power, and under the musical direction of Steve Charles.
Born in Montreal in 1934, Cohen is a globally celebrated artist who straddles the worlds of poetry, literature, visual art, and music. Songs such as So Long, Marianne, Bird on a Wire, First We Take Manhattan, and the ballad Hallelujah have been covered by numerous artists.
“Cohen is a Canadian icon and Chelsea Hotel is such an entertaining, inventive staging of Cohen’s work,” said Donna Spencer, artistic producer at the Firehall Arts Centre. “It not only captures the imagination of Cohen fans, but also introduces a whole new generation to his music.”
The opening night includes appetizers at 7 p.m. before the show, and the the following night, dessert and coffee will be served after the show.
VocalEye audio description will be available during the performance on March 1 at 4 p.m.
Tickets are generally $35-43. VocalEye audio description is $25 and student rush is $15.
