“We do not grow too old to dance,” said legendary Texas square dance caller Herb Greggereson in 1953. “We grow old because we do not dance.”

The sentiment remains today for enthusiasts at the Surrey Square Wheelers Square Dance Club.

Square dancing is a low-impact activity with a group of friends. It combines physical and mental activity set to music and is accompanied with wide smiles and laughter.

The club is gearing up for a new season, which starts on the evening of Sept. 7 at the Port Kells Community Hall, 18918 88 Ave.

The Square Wheelers are also working with the City of Surrey to promote an introductory square dance program in Cloverdale that starts in October. For more information, check page 20 of the Cloverdale Leisure Services Guide or visit and click and check Surrey Leisure Services.

The Province of British Columbia has proclaimed September 18-24 as Square Dance Awareness Week.
