Surrey RCMP say a 63-year-old man was lucky to escape with minor injuries after a bullet grazed his head during a home invasion in North Surrey early Friday morning.

Three armed men invaded a home in the 11000 block of 129 Street at approximately 1:40 a.m.

Surrey RCMP, the Emergency Response Team and police dogs were called to the scene where they discovered an elderly man who had been shot in the lower part of his head near his neck.

The home was heavily contaminated with bear spray and several small calibre shell casings were also found inside. Police believe the bear spray was used by the two male occupants of the home to fend off the attackers.

The victim sustained a non-life threatening head injury.

The suspects are believed to be three black males, and gang activity is not initially suspected, say police. One of the suspects may also have appeared at the residence, which police say is not known to them, the previous day.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if you wish to remain anonymous.
