Surrey murder trial delayed
A man accused of murdering a woman in Surrey in 2010 was expected to enter a guilty plea in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday, but opted to postpone the decision until next month.
The second-degree murder trial of Dustin Lee Lalonde, 31, was scheduled to begin Monday (Feb. 25) in New Westminster Supreme Court. However, his lawyer said LaLonde had last week resumed taking his anti-psychosis medication after being off it since last October.
"He's indicating some confusion with regard to his thoughts right now," said lawyer Paul McMurray.
LaLonde, an overweight man with short dark hair, listened from the prisoner's box before being returned to custody. He was charged in September 2011 in connection to Teri-Lyn Williams' death. A provincial court judge ordered him to stand trial after a pretrial hearing a year ago.
He recently served a four-year sentence in Kelowna for robbery and aggravated assault related to an August 2010 incident.
Williams, who sometimes went by the first name Toni, was 41. Her body was found dumped in some bushes near 136 Street and 104A Avenue on June 9, 2010.
LaLonde is due back in court on March 14.
