Drug addiction is no party
As a former minister responsible for mental health and addictions, I was disappointed to hear federal health minister Tony Clement’s stark warning “the party’s over” for illicit drug users.
His crass, insensitive comment clearly illustrates Clements’ lack of understanding of the deeply destructive effects that illicit drugs have in our communities.
We have much work to do to rid our communities of illicit drugs and the criminal activity accompanying them.
Mr. Clement’s simplistic responses to a complex problem is disrespectful to those people and their families who suffer with addictions.
No child grows up wanting to become a drug addict.
For every addict there is a personal story and for every family of an addict there is a great deal of pain. But rest assured there never was a “party.”
