Don’t take the things you have for granted
As I was coming home on the bus from a long day at school, I noticed at the end of the bus loop there was a lady – she had been on the same bus, going to the same stop – walking around and seeming lost.
I quickly found out that she had lost her sight and unfortunately the stop had not been part of her regular routine.
So I felt obligated to help her. Therefore I approached her and asked if she needed help, and as a smile appeared across her face, she replied yes.
I later found out that she was going the same way as I was going back to Surrey Central SkyTrain Station from Production Way University Station – a long ride.
As I helped her navigate home, she told me of her life and how she was still able to proficiently do everyday routines despite the loss of sight.
This woman was so strong and inspiring. She found ways to retrace her steps from memory, able to navigate through places with touch and able to listen to details so profoundly.
It got me thinking that I take what I have for granted – my sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste. These traits are so natural to us, we sometimes do not think about what life would be like without them.
So I just wanted to say thank you to the lady who inspired me and hopefully others to appreciate the senses that we were blessed with.
