Rebels rally late to defeat North Shore

Waiting until the second half of the game to play at their best, the Surrey Rebels pulled away from the North Shore Indians over the final 26 minutes for a 12-4 win in West Coast Junior Lacrosse League play Monday night in the Cloverdale Arena.

Tyler Voisey and Harrison Mortimore tallied for Surrey in the first period, allowing the home team to come from behind to tie the contest after 20 minutes.

Brett Hall put Surrey in front six minutes into the second frame, and after the Indians tied the game again, Brandon Baldo, Conor Campbell and Max Richards scored in a six-minute span for a 6-3 Surrey lead.

Goals by Richards and Mat Cruickshank in the first minutes of the third period put the game out of reach. Richards completed his hat trick, with Kyle Clarke, Voisey and Cruickshank also scoring in the final frame.

After getting outshot 21-19 in the first frame, the Rebels finished with a 61-50 shots on goal advantage.

Jeff Geyer turned aside 46 shots and also earned a pair of assists.

Ryan Millen, called up from the Intermediate B division, assisted on three goals, with Timmy Tammen and Clarke collecting two each

Surrey had a huge edge on special teams, scoring three times on seven extra-man situations, while killing off four North Shore powerplays.

The Rebels, now at 4-6-1 (won-lost-tied), play in Coquitlam against the 4-5-1 Saints Sunday night, before hosting the 6-4 Richmond Roadrunners Monday at 8 p.m. in the Cloverdale Arena.
