Seahawks fall in preseason play
The current high school football season began the same way last year ended for the Seaquam Seahawks, with a loss to the Mission Roadrunners.
The Seahawks fell 20-2 in Mission Saturday afternoon in a Senior AA exhibition contest.
The Roadrunners took and early lead, scoring a touchdown on their second possession for a 7-0 lead. Both teams turned the ball over twice before half time, but it was Mission taking advantage to score two more majors for a 20-0 lead at the break.
Seaquam’s defence scored the only points of the second half, pressuring the Roadrunners quarterback for a safety.
Tyler Green and Jarren Ralf played well on both sides of the ball.
Ralf recorded six tackles and a quarterback sack on defence, while rushing for 25 yards on offence.
Green was credited with the safety, and added six tackles and a pair of sacks. The quarterback also threw for 59 yards, and ran for 17 more.
Other offensive leaders were Mark Lego with 50 yards rushing, Taylor Northway with 30 yards passing and receiving, and Jordan Quitzau with 29 yards receiving.
The Seahawks are away from home again next weekend. They will travel to the Okanagan for a Friday night game in the Apple Bowl against the Senior AAA Kelowna Owls.
The Holy Cross Crusaders were shut out in their first preseason contest, losing 36-0 to the John Barsby Bulldogs in a Senior AA game in Nanaimo.
The Crusaders face the Senior AA Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers Friday at 1:30 p.m., then will host the Senior AAA St. Thomas More Knights Sept. 24.
The Panthers travelled to Parksville Saturday for their first exhibition game, and defeated the Senior AA Ballenas Whalers 21-7.
