Crusaders win high school tournament

It’s six in a row for the Holy Cross Crusaders.

The senior girls high school basketball team pulled away from the Arch Bishop Carney Stars in the fourth quarter for a 45-32 win in the championship game of the B.C. Catholic tournament at Holy Cross high school.

The Crusaders led 28-27 after three quarters, but paced by a 12-point game from Rachel Beauchamp and 11 from Amy Sprangers, they outscored Arch Bishop Carney 17-5 in the final period.

Holy Cross reached the final by defeating the Little Flower Academy Angels 76-25 on Thursday, and stopping the St. Thomas Aquinas Fighting Saints 36-19 Friday.

Michelle Bos with 18 points, Sprangers with 11 and Beauchamp with 10 scored in double figures against Little Flower.

Against the Fighting Saints, Holy Cross was led by 15 points from Beauchamp and eight rebounds from Sprangers.

After losing their first game, the Crusaders’ boys team won three straight to place fifth.

Holy Cross fell 47-33 to the St. Ann’s Crusaders Thursday, with Taylor Browne and Konrad Piaseczny netting 10 points each in a losing cause.

Aaron Madaisky put up a double double, scoring 21 points and adding 10 rebounds to lead Holy Cross to a 52-35 win over the St. Patrick Celtics. Piaseczny added 17 points.

Later in the day, Harmon Dhillon netted 20 points and Browne contributed with 12 in a 48-24 Crusaders win over the St. John Brebeuf Bears of Abbotsford.

Holy Cross closed out the tournament Saturday, edging the Notre Dame Jugglers 56-52, paced by 15-point games by Dhillon and Browne.
