SPORTS BRIEFS: Kolstad honoured

Long distance runner Kristen Kolstad was honoured by B.C. Athletics Saturday night in Richmond.

The graduate of L.A. Matheson Secondary School in Surrey was named the Senior Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year at an awards ceremony at the Hilton Vancouver Airport Hotel.

Kolstad, running for the Simon Fraser University Clan team, won the 2007 NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) regional championship, and went on to place seventh at the national championships.

Rower remembered

The athletic department at the University College of the Fraser Valley are mourning the loss of North Delta native Jen Simpson.

The 20-year-old member of the UCFV Cascades rowing team died in a car accident last Sunday morning in Coquitlam.

“The UCFV Athletic Department is deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic event,” said UCFV athletic director Rick Nickelchok. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends at this difficult time.”

Simpson was in her third year of an Associate of Science degree at UCFV. A graduate of North Delta Secondary School, she was in her first season with the Cascades rowing program. After experiencing her first races this past fall, Simpson reached a personal best time at the provincial indoor rowing competition last week.

“We are heartbroken to have lost such a valued member of our Cascades rowing team,” said UCFV head coach Liz Chisholm. “The team speaks of Jen as the ‘light on the team, the real spirit of the group and our sunshine girl.’ Jen showed up to every practice ready to go with a big smile on her face. She was excited to be on the water and put an effort into every minute.”

Kicking for Canada

Surrey native Monica Lam-Feist was named to the Canadian national women’s soccer team just prior to the squad participating at the Four Nations tournament in China earlier this month.

The Grade 11 student at Sullivan Heights Secondary School, who turned 17 yesterday (Thursday), has captained Canada’s under-17 team and last year signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps, playing with the club’s under-18 and reserve teams.

Lam-Feist did not see action with the team in China, but previously played three games wearing the Canadian uniform at the International Soccer Festival in Alabama.
