Sports Briefs: Friday night fights
A super heavyweight bout is the highlight of an eight-fight card Friday night at the City Boxing Club gym.
Paul Chih-ping, a six-foot-six, 253-pound boxer from the Showtime club in Vancouver will take on Pavan Singh Ballie (six-foot-four, 240 pounds) of Revolution Boxing in Surrey in the feature fight.
Two local boxers are up against each other in a middleweight bout, as Scott Turner of the host club will take on Chris Bassanich of the Port Kells club.
Shane Miester, a competitor in the 175-pound class, will make his debut as a City Boxing Club member by preparing for the B.C. Golden Gloves tournament with an exhibition match against heavy weight Shawn Kroeker.
Connor McNamee, 15, and Matt Leclair, 11, of the host club will also step into the ring Friday at City Boxing’s gym at 207-19232 Enterprise Way. The first bout is set for 7:30 p.m.
Perfect – again
Surrey bowler Ray Galang hit a pair of milestones at Xcalibur Lanes.
Competing in Spring Singles league play, Galang bowled a 802 series – the fifth 800 series of his career – with games of 299, 259 and 244. He followed up with his fifth perfect game, rolling a 300 on March 14.
Youth soccer tryouts
Surrey United will be holding open tryouts for an under-nine girls development team for the 2008-09 season.
Tryouts for girls born in 2000 will be held at Cloverdale Athletic Park (turf field) on Monday, March 31 from 6–7:30 p.m., and Wednesday, April 2 from 4:30–6 p.m.
Players are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of each session to check in.
The development team will train twice and play once each week during the season, and players will have the opportunity to be involved in the Surrey United Performance Academy under the direction of Club Technical Director Craig Dalrymple and former England and Whitecaps professional Derek Possee.

Lawn bowlers AGM
Kennedy Park Lawn Bowling Club’s annual general meeting and potluck dinner will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 5:30 p.m. at 11760 88 Ave.

Seventh at nationals
Marc Schofield of Xcalibur Lanes in Surrey placed seventh at the in the Bowling World Cup National Finals competition in Toronto.
Schofield, who was eight pins out of sixth position, averaged 187 over the 16 games bowled, with a high score of 225.
Locals compete for Canada
Two local softball players were part of the Canadian national team which won the gold medal at the International Challenge tournament in Australia.
Outfielder Melanie Matthews of Surrey and middle infielder Jen Yee of North Delta were part of the Canadian team which went 6-3 (won-lost) in round robin play, then stopped Japan 2-1 in eight innings in the championship game.
