Hawks take two from Ice
The Hawks thumped the Kootenay Ice (3-23-2, won-loss-tied) by scores of 11-2 and 12-3 last weekend at the Langley Events Centre. Their record improves to 14-10-6, seven ahead of the sixth place Canadians, and nine back of the fourth-place Vancouver Chiefs
The score was close for much of the first period Saturday, with Eric Callegari of Langley and Cole Plotnikoff of Surrey giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead before the Ice got their first goal.
Surrey’s Spencer Unger and Callegari made it 4-1 just before the first intermission, and Kootenay responded less than a minute into the second frame to cut the difference to 4-2.
Surrey’s Rhett Wilcox, Addison Bazian of Kamloops and Jakob Stukel of Cloverdale upped the difference to 7-1 going into the third period. Wilcox and Bazian each netted their second goal of the game in the third, and Josh Pollock (Langley) and Mitch Newsome (Surrey) notched their first.
Wilcox added four assists to his goal total to finish with six points, while Darien Craighead (Surrey) and Matthew Cox (White Rock) recorded three assists each.
It was a similar story Sunday. Valley West was up 2-0 when Kootenay tallied to make the score 2-1. The home side was up 4-1 after 20 minutes, and 7-2 after two periods.
Plotnikoff had a six-point game that included four goals, while Craighead scored twice and assisted on three others.
Wilcox with two, Stukel, Pollock, Bazian and Surrey’s Jake Fletcher were the other goal scorers. Stukel and Cox collected three assists each.
The Hawks will be tested next weekend, as they face the league-leading Vancouver Giants (26-2-2) in two games. The Hawks are the home team Saturday at 3:15 at the Langley Events Centre. Sunday’s game is at 9:30 a.m. at the Burnaby Winter Club.
